This week has one foot in full summer mode and the other foot already standing in fair week.

There is a Christmas-in-July book night in Wentzville, food trucks in Lake Saint Louis, a craft fair in O'Fallon, Cars and Cones at The Meadows, two big Frankie Martin's shows, a Peach Festival in St. Charles with more than 1,200 people interested on Facebook, and the St. Charles County Fair starting Tuesday at Rotary Park.

Which is a lot of activity for a calendar that still thinks it is allowed to call this "late July."

There is also a conservation area just down Highway 94 where lakes, trails, fishing spots, and old World War II TNT bunkers are all somehow sharing the same address.

Hellen Back Acoustic is returning to 63385 Speakeasy for a stripped-down, lighter rock set. If your Friday night needs live music but not necessarily a full volume commitment, this one sits right in town.

Fat Pocket at Frankie Martin's Garden

Fat Pocket brings horns, big vocals, and high-energy party-band music to Frankie Martin's. Basically, Cottleville is once again offering a free outdoor option for anyone whose weekend starts better with a crowd and a horn section.

Peach Festival

Saint Charles Market on Main Street is hosting its first Peach Festival, and Facebook interest was sitting around 1,200 people. Expect a market morning built around peach-themed shopping, treats, and the very seasonal idea that breakfast can absolutely involve fruit cobbler energy.

6th Annual Reps for Vets
📍 Freedom Fitness Wentzville

Freedom Fitness Wentzville is hosting its 6th Annual Reps for Vets event. The Facebook page is still light on details, but it made the local threshold and is worth keeping on the radar if you like fitness events with a community purpose.

Summer Craft & Vendor Fair
📍 Stonebridge Community Church, 201 Meriwether Lewis Drive, O'Fallon
⏰ 10 AM-2 PM

Stonebridge Community Church is hosting a free-admission summer craft and vendor fair with local vendors and shopping. It had more than 360 people interested on Facebook, which usually means "just browsing" may need a budget.

Christmas in July: A Holiday Book Night
📍 Imagination Pottery Studio, 1463 Wentzville Parkway, Wentzville
⏰ 5:30-8 PM

Imagination Pottery is hosting an 18+ Christmas-in-July book night with holiday TBR recommendations, festive pottery pieces, snacks, a coffee bar, and bookish vibes. The reservation fee is $13 plus tax, pottery is purchased separately, and yes, apparently we are allowed to discuss holiday reading while it is still very much July outside.

Cars and Cones STL - Meetup 6 of 2026
📍 Clementine's Naughty & Nice Creamery, The Meadows, Lake Saint Louis

Cars and Cones STL is meeting at Clementine's for a family-friendly car meetup with ice cream, free parking, and a featured nonprofit, Revved Up Wishes Foundation. The organizers are very clear about no burnouts, no revving, and no reckless driving, which is a polite way of saying the cars are supposed to be fun without turning the parking lot into a court exhibit.

Platinum Rock Legends at FMG

Platinum Rock Legends returns to Frankie Martin's Garden for a Saturday night rock show. More than 360 people were interested on Facebook, so if Cottleville feels louder than usual Saturday night, this is probably why.

Paint Pouring Class

2026 St. Charles County Fair Queen Pageant

The St. Charles County Fair Queen Pageant takes place under the event tent at the fairgrounds. Contestants will compete in evening gown, talent, on-stage questions, and coronation, and the event is free to attend.

Holt Jr. Indians Cheerleading has a pool party listed at Splash Station, with organizers pointing families to TeamSnap for the RSVP link. This one is more niche than the usual community event, but it passed the Wentzville Facebook threshold, so it gets the "check the details before you show up" treatment.

The Interrupted Chapter Club with Swap the Playroom

Wentzville Reads and Swap the Playroom are hosting a bookish mom meetup at Quail Ridge Park. Bring the kids, talk books with other adults, and let the little ones play while everyone admits that sometimes one chapter takes three days.

St. Charles County Fair Opens

⏰ Gates open 4 PM; rodeo at 7:30 PM

The St. Charles County Fair opens Tuesday at Rotary Park and runs through Saturday, August 1. Tuesday's schedule includes the gates opening at 4 PM, the opening ceremony at 6 PM, Lane Mae Sparkles, free carnival rides with paid admission, a DJ dance party and karaoke, and the T&A Bucking Bulls Rodeo at 7:30 PM.

Clover - Jammin' Concert Series

Clover is playing O'Fallon's free Jammin' Concert Series at Civic Park. Bring chairs or blankets and let O'Fallon handle the Tuesday-night live music problem for you.

St. Charles County Fair Rodeo - Night Two

⏰ 7:30 PM

The fair's rough stock rodeo returns Wednesday night with bulls, broncs, barrels, and mutton busting. The full day also includes gates opening at 9 AM, the Kolb Exhibition Center, livestock judging, S&S Farms Exotic Petting Zoo, mini golf, Black Bird Strut, and more fairground activity than one person should probably try to summarize while hungry.

St. Charles County Fair Continues

The fair continues after this newsletter window with Thursday's truck pull and car show, Friday's Xcaliber Truck & Tractor Pull and DirtyMuggs, and Saturday's kid games, Super Farmer competition, demo derby, and fair finale. If you are trying to plan ahead, the short version is: Rotary Park is going to be busy.

Some places hide because they are small.

This one hides because it is enormous.

August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area sits down in Weldon Spring, and if you have ever driven Highway 94 and thought, "I know there is conservation land around here somewhere," you were technically correct in the least helpful way possible.

Because this is not a little patch of woods.

It is nearly 7,000 acres.

That is not a typo.

Nearly 7,000 acres of lakes, fields, trails, fishing spots, old roads, range facilities, and quiet corners where the whole place feels much farther from suburbia than it actually is.

The Missouri Department of Conservation purchased the area in 1947 from the federal government, with Mrs. August A. Busch Sr. donating part of the purchase price as a memorial to her husband.

Which already gives it a little history.

But the part that makes the place feel different is what happened before that.

In the early 1940s, the land was used by the Department of the Army as part of a TNT munitions plant for World War II.

And MDC says about 100 of the old TNT storage bunkers still exist on the area.

One hundred.

Just sitting out there.

Which is the kind of detail that turns "let's go fishing" into "wait, this place used to do what?"

That is what I like about Busch Conservation Area.

On the surface, it is very practical.

You can fish.

You can walk.

You can bike certain trails.

You can use the visitor center.

You can bring a picnic.

You can take a kid to a lake and let the afternoon be simple.

All good.

All useful.

But underneath that, the whole place has this strange layered feeling.

Conservation area.

Old wartime landscape.

Family fishing spot.

Quiet drive.

Local history hiding behind gates, lakes, and gravel roads.

It is the kind of place where you can go with absolutely no grand plan and still feel like you found something.

Maybe you start with the visitor center.

Maybe you pick a short trail.

Maybe you drive slowly enough to notice the bunkers.

Maybe you bring a fishing pole and let the whole outing become pleasantly unproductive.

That is allowed.

Not every hidden gem needs to be a full-day itinerary with a spreadsheet and matching water bottles.

Sometimes the win is just realizing there is a huge public place nearby where you can get outside, learn one weird piece of local history, and be back home before anyone has to ask what is for dinner.

If you go, start with the visitor center or pick one lake/trail instead of trying to "do" the whole place.

Busch is too big for that.
